So what is actually defined by terms such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (ML)? AI basically refers to intelligence demonstrated by machines. In computer science, AI research revolves around intelligent agents, devices that are capable of perceiving their environment and are competent enough to take actions that maximize the probability of successfully achieving an objective. Hence the term AI is used in conjunction with agents that mimic cognitive functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as learning and problem solving.

ML is basically an AI technology that provides systems with the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. Therefore ML focuses on the development of computer programs that can adjust when exposed to new data. Some ML solutions focus on self-driving cars, speech recognition, or improved Web search engines. The method of ML is comparable to that of data mining. Both search through data to identify patterns. However, instead of extracting data for human understanding (as with data mining), ML utilizes the data to detect patterns in the data and adjusts the actions of the applications accordingly.
